¿Teguci What?

¿Teguci What? was started in December 2009 as a way for my husband and I to update our friends and family on the process and progress of our move from Des Moines, Iowa, USA, to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, after I was offered and accepted a teaching job beginning in the summer of 2010. (The blog name stems from the fact that our friends and family had trouble pronouncing Tegucigalpa — some still do!) After some early posts full of anticipation, moving woes, and the Olympics, we moved to Honduras in July, and now blog frequently about our experiences getting to know the city, the people, and the culture here in Tegus.

Both my husband and I blog, and each of our entries have separate flavors. Chris' blogs tend to be shorter, less picture-filled, and more insightful. My blogs, on the other hand ... are a little more colorful, sporadic, and (filled with parenthetical anecdotes). Since we are both working down here, (Chris for a company based in the United States, myself for an American school here just outside the city), our experiences are different, yet we both start and end in the same place every day, so we have a lot of shared experiences, too.

¿Teguci What? (¿Teguci Qué?) inició en diciembre de 2009 como una manera en la que mi esposo y yo podríamos mantener al día a nuestros amigos y familiares en el proceso y progreso de nuestra mudanza desde Des Moines, Iowa, Estados Unidos de América, a Tegucigalpa, Honduras, luego de que me fuera ofrecido y aceptado un empleo de enseñanza en el que comenzaría en el verano de 2010. (El nombre del blog surge del hecho de que nuestros amigos y familiares tenían problemas pronunciando Tegucigalpa - !algunos todavía lo tienen!). Después de unos cuantos posts iniciales llenos de anticipación, de dificultades en la mudanza y de las olimpiadas, nos mudamos a Honduras en julio, y ahora blogueamos con frecuencia sobre nuestras experiencias conociendo la ciudad, la gente y la cultura aquí en Teguz.

Tanto mi esposo como yo blogueamos, y las entradas de cada uno tienen sabores separados. Los blogs de Chris tienden a ser más cortos, con menos imágenes y más introspectivos. Mis blogs, por otra parte... son un poco más coloridos, esporádicos y (llenos de anécdotas entre paréntesis). Por cuanto ambos nos encontramos trabajando por aquí (Chris para una compañía de Estados Unidos, y yo para una escuela americana en las afueras de la ciudad), nuestras experiencias son diferentes, sin embargo ambos comenzamos y terminamos cada día en el mismo sitio, por lo que también tenemos muchas experiencias compartidas.

Estamos difrutando mucho nuestra aventura hondureña, y esperamos que usted haga una parada y chequee ¿Teguci What? y la comparta con nosotros.

The Roberts — a lot about nothing and then some

Don't let our silly title of the blog fool you! (The Roberts — a lot about nothing and then some) We began this wacky adventure with just a little information on the country of Honduras (and of the Spanish language itself), but willing spirits to commit to at least two years of working here. We are a couple of teachers who just came from St. Louis (originally from east Tennessee) to teach in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, at an international school. This is our first overseas teaching experience.

We both write on the blog — Elisa is prone to pictures, while Colin is prone to deeper commentary. Because of this blog, we are better connected friends back home, and it offers a good way to express what this short bit of time has taught us. As you read, you'll find out some of our adventures, some of our struggles, and what changes we've embraced (or are at least working on embracing). Also, every now and then we'll entertain you with some classroom stories. Teaching always offers a plethora of opportunities for storytelling. We love people and we hope you find that our blog gives you a small glimpse into how our lives have been changed because of "the little country that could."

¡No deje que el nombre ridiculo de nuestro blog los distraiga! (Los Roberts — mucho de nada y aun más). Comenzamos esta loca aventura nada mas con un poco de información acerca del pais de Honduras (y del Español tambien), pero con un gran espíritu de entregarnos a trabajar por lo menos dos años aquí. Somos un par de maestros que vinimos de St. Louis (originalmente del este de Tennessee) a enseñar en Tegucigalpa, Honduras, en una escuela internacional. Es nuestra primera experiencia enseñando fuera de los Estados Unidos.

Ambos escribimos en el blog — Elisa se enfoca en las fotos mientras Colin se enfoca en los comentarios. Por este blog, estamos más conectados con nuestros amigos en nuestro pais y ofrece una buena manera de expresar lo que este poco tiempo nos ha enseñado. En lo que vaya leyendo encontrará algunas de nuestras aventuras, dificultades y cambios que hemos hecho (o por lo menos hemos tratado de hacer). Además, de vez en cuando los trataremos de entretener con algunas historias de aulas de clase. La docencia siempre ofrece una plétora de oportunidades para contar historias. Nos encanta la gente y esperamos que usted se de cuenta de cómo nuestro blog le muestra la manera en la que nuestras vidas han sido cambiadas debido al “pequeño país que sí pudo.”

Learn and Play

Learn and Play is an educational space where I want to share some of the activities of my work as a preschool teacher. We focus on English language teaching. Among these activities are field trips, celebrations, the themes and form of participation that children have, because in the world there are so many ways to implement the same things and for me it is interesting to discover these things on the Internet. Children are wonderful. Learning to work with them and understand their imaginary world is a big challenge because we are responsible to fill a good part of that world with solid elements and values that they will find meaning in the beginning of their early formation but will remember for a lifetime.

Learn and Play (Aprender y Jugar) es un espacio educativo, donde quiero dar a conocer algunas de la actividades de mi trabajo que realizamos como maestra de pre-kinder. Nos enfocámos en la enseñanza del idioma inglés. Entre esas actividades están los paseos, las celebraciones, los temas y la forma de participación que tienen los niños, ya que en el mundo hay tantas formas de aplicar las mismas cosas y para mi se volvió algo interesante descubrirlas a través del internet. Los niños y niñas son maravillos(as). Aprender a trabajar con ellos y entender su mundo (imaginario) es un gran reto porque somos responsables una buena parte de llenar ese mundo de elementos sólidos y de valores, que le encontraran sentido en el comienzo de su formación primaria pero que recordaremos para toda la vida.
